Understanding your EER is a pivotal step towards achieving your fitness or weight management goals. It provides a clearer picture of how many calories your body needs based on various factors, including basal metabolic rate (BMR) and physical activity level.
What is EER?
EER, or Estimated Energy Requirement, quantifies the total daily energy consumption needed to maintain body weight considering one's basal metabolic rate and activity level. BMR is the energy expended by the body at rest, with the Schofield equation being a commonly used method to estimate this value.
EER Formula
The EER calculation involves determining your BMR and adjusting it based on your physical activity level. The formula for BMR is:
\[ P = (10 \times \text{weight in kg}) + (6.25 \times \text{height in cm}) - (5 \times \text{age in years}) + s \]
Where \(s\) is a constant (+5 for men, -161 for women).
To calculate your total daily energy expenditure, multiply your BMR by your activity level factor, which varies based on how active you are:
- Not Active: BMR \(\times 1.2\)
- Slightly Active: BMR \(\times 1.375\)
- Moderately Active: BMR \(\times 1.55\)
- Very Active: BMR \(\times 1.725\)
